Commodities Grown: Jalapeno

1) When did you know you wanted to be a farmer? When I was a young boy, my father was a grain farmer. Since then, I visualized farming as being an integral part of the economy for southern Sonora, and I wanted to be a part of it.

2) When did you actually start farming? I did not have my own operation until approximately nine years ago.

3) What did you grow first? My first harvest was jalapeno peppers and tomatillos.

4) What commodities have you grown over the years? Over the years we have grown jalapeno, serrano, caribe and anaheim peppers, potatoes, squash, onions, tomatoes and tomatillos.

5) What is your favorite commodity to grow? To eat? My favorite commodity for growing is the jalapeno pepper because I see great potential for this product in southern Sonora. For eating, I like a combination of the hot peppers in a very Mexican salsa.

6) When you’re not farming/working, what do you like to do with your spare time? In my spare time I like to travel, see different places, meet different people and learn about different cultures.

7) How would you describe your farm to someone who has never seen it before? I do not believe there is any farmer who doesn’t take special pride in his farm. The proximity to the Rio Maya gives me an exceptional environment for vegetation, creating a very pleasant view.

8 ) What gives you the most satisfaction in farming? To see the quality of our products gives me great satisfaction. And being recognized by our label and quality is an extraordinary sensation.

9) How long have you been farming and how long has farming been in your family? I have had my own operation for approximately nine years, but farming has been in my family for three generations.

10) Tell your story behind your favorite brand ‘label’ and why it was chosen. The story behind our label is very simple. It is a combination of the last names of the present generation of the Bours Zaragoza family “BOZA”. We have a firm conviction in caring for the name, and what better way to commit ourselves than to give it to our products.

11) If you could choose any other line of work what would that be and why? I personally manage other family businesses, mainly real estate and construction. The predominant family business is the production and marketing of livestock, especially pork. We are pioneers in Mexico of exports to Japan.

12) What are your favorite places to visit in Mexico and why? Mexico is very diverse, but Mexico City is definitely a place you have to visit.
